Call the Midwife knows how to treat the fans because they just hinted at what's to come in their 2024 Christmas special.

Yes, we are only in July, but the team behind the Call the midwife Social media has been keeping fans updated with updates from the set and has just released a brand new photo from filming the Christmas special featuring Georgie Glen as Miss Higgins.

In the behind-the-scenes snapshot shared on Instagram, Higgins is surrounded by bowls of Brussels sprouts and is busy peeling them ahead of a festive feast.

The caption reads: “We've just got our hands on this photo from the set of the Call the Midwife Christmas special, coming to your screens during the 2024 Christmas season! It's a wonderful behind the scenes portrait of our own Georgie Glen as the fearless Miss Higgins.

“But we were struck by the sheer abundance of British Christmas vegetables: SPROUTS! Lots of them!”

The post cheekily states: “Well, the humble Brussels sprout is a vegetable that… how shall we put it… divides opinions among our Christmas guests – especially children!”

“The British have an ongoing love/hate relationship with this disreputable staple food – some even complain that it stimulates the digestive system more than is desirable or polite! 😉

“And yet it remains a central part of the traditional British Christmas meal. And the more curious among you may wonder why Millicent makes so many piping nozzles here… All will be revealed!”

The post ends with the teaser: “Call the Midwife will be back with a new Christmas special and Series 14 in 2025.”

Fans were flooded with rave comments about the special's brand new look, with one fan writing, “OMG season 14 I am beyond excited. This is THE BEST news!!! Can't wait!!! Whoop whoop.”

Another commented: “Wow I literally can't wait for Christmas,” and a third said: “I'm beyond excited already.”

Not much is known about Call the midwifeWe can't quite focus on the Christmas special or the Season 14 plot yet, but at an event promoting Season 13 last year, show creator and head writer Heidi Thomas dropped a hint about how certain elements of the Season 13 story would continue in Season 14.

This includes the history of new midwives Rosalind Clifford (Natalie Quarry) and Joyce Highland (Renee Bailey), as well as the plot about the real-life struggle of nurses for better pay and working conditions, which began in 1969.

Another person who will continue her story in season 14 is Trixie, whose return was confirmed by the actress. Helen George herself.

In May 2024, the actress posted a photo of herself in her work dress on set in her Instagram story, where she plays the popular midwife.

It's unclear what a big role Trixie will play in this year's Christmas special and the show's 14th season, but fans can rest assured she will make an appearance.
