Tiger Woods and Justin Timberlake open luxury bar in golf mecca

Longtime friends and business partners Tiger Woods and Justin Timberlake are teaming up across the pond: not for a best-ball tournament, but for what they hope will be the best sports bar in Scotland.

The new upscale pub in St. Andrews, the “home of golf,” is to be a conversion of the city’s old cinema and will be called T-Squared Social.

The two global superstars, shareholders in property development company NEXUS Luxury Collection, have been given the green light to transform the cinema into a luxury establishment. According to the BBC, “T-Squared Social will transform the New Picture House Cinema into a luxury bar with sports simulators, duckpin bowling and darts, while retaining two cinema screens.”

The cinema opened in 1930 and has a seating capacity of 700. Key elements of the building, including the ceiling, walls and stage, will be retained, while the project is expected to create 40 to 45 new jobs.

The duo already runs a New York sports bar called T-Squared Social in Midtown Manhattan.

Woods previously said he and Timberlake came up with the idea while playing a round of golf together in the Bahamas.

And now Fife Council has granted them planning permission for the project.

After approving the plans, the council wrote: “The proposal is considered acceptable in terms of design, detailing and choice of materials and would protect and enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area. Therefore, the proposal is considered to be in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Development Plan and relevant policies.”

But approval was never a given.

In fact, a petition against the project was launched last year, signed by more than 12,000 people who feared the redevelopment would “destroy an important part of our city's identity and history,” according to Britain's Daily Mirror. Protesters also described the cinema as “the heart and soul of St Andrews” and called the redevelopment “deeply disturbing.” The backlash eventually led to plans for the redevelopment being changed. The petition organizers announced earlier this year that they had met with the backers of T-Squared Social, the tabloid reported.

This has eased their concerns. “We believe their business plans are in line with our desire to make the cinema a thriving institution and a pillar of the St Andrews community. After an incredible 12,000 signatures and a successful campaign, they have listened to all of our concerns and we are now at a point where we feel comfortable working closely with them for the benefit of the cinema.”

According to Golf Digest, “The new sports bar will be located about a half-mile from the Old Course, where Woods won the 2000 and 2005 Open Championships. Timberlake also has a connection to the historic racetrack, having played there several times, including at the 2019 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
