The art of sampling in Kaytranada’s “Timeless”

Featuring Thundercat, PinkPantheress, Channel Tres, Mariah the Scientist and Childish Gambino.

As a writer and classically trained musician, the art of sampling has always been a mystery to me. The idea of creating music by mixing elements from previously composed songs is fascinating, and I find it a little difficult to understand how this method can produce entirely new tracks with their own characteristics and unique identity. Perhaps now, given the heated public debate about AI, I understand a little better the possibilities of analyzing and remixing pre-existing material to create new material.

In the case of Kaytranada, a true master of sampling, his signature sound is unmistakably unique, even considering the overwhelming number of artists he collaborates with on *Timeless*.

Legends from hip-hop, R&B, funk, jazz, and various genres associated with black music are featured here. Kaytranada is not only a brilliant producer and sampling expert, but also contributes his own vocal work to the mix. Given the number of big names, quality production, and Kaytranada's versatile talent, you can't go wrong with this album.

If one were to review each track individually, the piece would become more of a book than a review or recommendation, as this gem of an album has so much to offer. The clever sampling, the interesting use of synths, Kaytranada's vocals, the variety of genres and styles covered, and the contributions of his collaborators create an overwhelming eclecticism that is simply too vast to cover in detail.

But the bottom line is that I can say with certainty: I think any dance music enthusiast, or honestly any music lover, will find something to like about this record. It covers so much, and everything it covers, it covers very well.
