Doctor Who writer says Nicola Coughlan will 'break your heart' in special episode

Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat has given a taste of what fans can expect from Nicola Coughlan's appearance in the upcoming Christmas special.

The “Bridgerton” star was spotted filming the long-running sci-fi series in Wales last year. Showrunner Russell T Davies later revealed that she would appear in the 2024 Christmas episode.

Although it is not yet confirmed who the actress will play, Moffat has warned her fans that she will cause plenty of excitement among them.

“Nicola is wonderful in this. She will break your heart,” he recently told Ireland AM.

“I'm not allowed to say anything about it. At least I don't think I'm allowed to say anything about it, so I'll just keep my mouth shut,” he added.

Referring to her appearance on the episode earlier this year, Coughlan expressed her excitement and joked that she was trying to catch up on the show's history after being cast.

“It's really exciting,” she said. “I got the call from Russell T. Davies and he said, 'Come and hang out with us in Cardiff' and I said, 'Okay! I don't know anything but I'll come'.”

“I tried reading the Wikipedia page for Doctor Who and it's like a novel in itself, so I don't think I'll be able to get from the 1960s to the present in my head.

“But [Ncuti Gatwa] is incredible in the role… It was a lot of fun. I think it was supposed to be a secret that it was Christmas, but then Russell told everyone.”

Meanwhile, Davies recently promised his fans that they would also get some answers about Anita Dobson's enigmatic character Mrs Flood in the special, giving a taste of what will be a “trip of a lifetime”.

Doctor Who will be broadcast on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available in the UK on BBC iPlayer.
