EastEnders boss gives first hints about Christmas plot

Spoilers for EastEnders follow.

EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw has dropped the first hints about this Christmas' storylines – and it looks like a lot of the focus will be on the Mitchells.

The BBC soap offered quite a dramatic spectacle over the Christmas holidays last year with the flashforward story of “The Six,” which built up over the course of 2023 before the mysterious male victim and his killer were revealed at the end of the year.

The executive producer has now dropped some hints about what to expect this year, suggesting that the recent arrival of the new Mitchells could play a role in the holiday plans.

“Christmas is in full swing. There's a board in the story office and everything is connected,” Clenshaw told The Mirror. “I liken it to a tapestry board, everything has to fit together.”

“We have the new Mitchells on the team, who will cause some trouble. And we have some surprises coming up in the fall and towards the end of the year.”

Fans know that Stevie Mitchell's estranged son Teddy recently arrived at Albert Square with his sons Harry and Barney when Billy learned that Teddy is his half-brother.

In the latest plot twist, Stevie reveals a big death secret to Billy after Phil uncovers evidence against him.

Elsewhere, Clenshaw has hinted that some characters could return for the show's 40th anniversary next year.

“As we approach our 40th year, I think the nostalgic element is very important,” he told The Sun. “We have some treats coming up in the autumn and at the end of the year.”

When asked if there might be a return of characters, he replied: “Maybe. It all depends on the story and where the characters are. But it has to come from the characters, it has to come from the story.”

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One. The show is also available to stream on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes are available as early as 6am before their TV broadcast.
