Community star takes responsibility for film delay after misunderstanding about co-star

The Community The film will not be shot this year after all – and one of its stars has taken responsibility for the delay.

In September, it was two years since it was announced that the sitcom's promise of “six seasons and a movie” would finally become a reality.

US streaming service Peacock shared the news seven years after the series ended in 2015, announcing that creator Dan Harmon would oversee the project. It has since been announced that all of the main cast, with the exception of Chevy Chase, would return.

While Jeff Winger star Joel McHale, who frequently makes guest appearances in hit series, The bearsaid in March 2024 that he would be “shocked” if the film didn't shoot that year, he has now given fans a disappointing update.

“I don't have a definitive update because for a moment we thought it would all happen this year and then it didn't happen,” he said GQ.

“But we have the money and this is a huge step. And hopefully people still want to see it. And Peacock is paying for it. And that's why I can't wait to do it.”

When asked when he thought filming might begin, McHale replied, “I would say vaguely, 'Next year.' How about that?”

The actor also dismissed suggestions that the delay was caused by Donald Glover, who returned earlier this year with a new Childish Gambino record; Glover's stock has risen considerably since then. Community ended in 2015.

“If it's anyone's fault, it's my schedule,” McHale said, adding, “It's not his at all. He was available.”

He also said that Shirley Bennett actress Yvette Nicole Brown would return for the film. “I think everyone is coming back. So far we're doing pretty well.”

Confirmed stars include McHale, Glover, Brown, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong.

Chevy Chase, who played millionaire Pierce Hawthorne, is unlikely to return in the series after Harmon previously hinted that possibly “not legal for him to come back”.

Chase's time on the show was full of drama behind the scenes. The 80-year-old actor left Community during the fourth season after allegedly making racist remarks towards Glover.

“Chevy was the first to realize how incredibly gifted Donald was, and he expressed his jealousy by trying to upset Donald,” Harmon said The New Yorker in 2018. “I remember apologizing to Donald after a particularly rough night with Chevy's non-PC [politically correct] choice of words, and Donald said, “I'm not even worried about it.”

In a subsequent interview on WTF with Marc Maron In the podcast, Chase suggested that his departure was of his own free will.

“I honestly felt like the show ultimately wasn't funny enough for me,” he said. “I felt a little limited. Everyone had their parts and I liked them all. It just wasn't tough enough for me.”

Chase added that he was “happier when he was alone” and “just didn't want to sit at that table with those people every day” – presumably referring to his co-stars.
