Britain may get a new government: This time Labour could be better for India

As the British Tories head for a historic electoral defeat, India stands a good chance of advancing bilateral relations under a new Labour government led by Keir Starmer. The Conservative Party may have deserved much of the criticism for its turbulent 15-year tenure. But when it comes to India, the Tories have undoubtedly driven a positive reset in relations between London and Delhi. The party has shed some of the British colonial baggage, freed British India policy from the Pakistan and Kashmir factors, and embedded engagement in the broader Indo-Pacific framework. Who is Keir Starmer, the favourite for the UK elections?

With the UK general election approaching on Thursday 4 July, all eyes are on Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, who is expected to win a landslide victory and become the first Labour prime minister to take power since 2010. His opponent is Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is doing everything he can to keep his Conservative Party in power despite voter fatigue brought on by 14 years of Tory rule.

Starmer has been the opposition leader in the British parliament for the past four years, leading the Social Democrats, mainly from the left, into the political centre. He is credited with reviving the Labour Party after its worst electoral defeat since the 1930s. Starmer, who entered parliament just a decade ago, not only made the party electable but also moved it to the centre on key policy issues by denouncing the failings of three Conservative prime ministers, a New York Times report said.
