Top line

Sony's Spider-Man spin-off Madame Web took the unwanted title of worst-reviewed film of the year, leaving behind a number of horror films, an animated film and at least one other big-budget flop.

Key data

Madame Web, Sony Pictures' Spider-Man-esque superhero thriller starring Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott and Emma Roberts, took the top spot on the worst-reviewed films of the year, earning a lackluster 26/100 critics' score on Metacritic and a measly 11% on Rotten Tomatoes – despite a reported $80 million budget.

The worst-rated films of 2024 included the sequel to the spooky Altitude film “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2,” which received a 27/100 rating from critics on Metacritic and a tepid 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Chris Pine’s “Poolman” (29/100 on Metacritic and 22% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Some films with bigger budgets also failed to convince, including “Garfield: The Movie”, with a budget of allegedly $60 million and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 36% (31/100 on Metacritic), and “Argylle”, one of the biggest flops of the year, with a budget of allegedly $200 million and a miserable rating (35/100 on Metacritic and 33% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Critics were unanimous in their criticism of Madame Web. The New York Times lamented the “absurd” story, the “loud, ridiculous” dialogue and the “uninspired” fights. The Guardian pulled no punches, calling the Sony superhero film a “confused mess” that received a series of terrible reviews not seen since 2019's eerie nightmare Cats.

Important background

Madame Web grossed a measly $23.54 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, making it one of the biggest Hollywood flops of the year. Among major releases (at least 3,000 theaters), the Spider-Man spin-off ranked 10th lowest since its release, grossing just over $43 million in the U.S. since its February release. The lowest-grossing film was the horror-romance Lisa Frankenstein, which grossed less than $10 million, followed by The Watchers ($17.7 million) and Ordinary Angels ($19.17 million).
