Bhole Baba, the preacher at the centre of the stampede in Hathras, was staying at the house of the head of the newspaper industry in Rajasthan, according to police | News from India

Religious preacher Suraj Pal, also known as Narayan Sakar Vishwa Hari or “Bhole Baba,” at whose satsang the stampede in Hathras took place, was familiar with a notorious paper leak from Rajasthan, police said.

According to police, the preacher used to stay at Harshvardhan Meena's house in Dausa whenever he visited Rajasthan. ADGP (Special Operations Group) VK Singh said Meena was the main accused in the leak of Rajasthan Junior Engineer Exam (JEN) papers 2020 case.

“In January, we searched Meena's house in Dausa in connection with the paper leak case. But before we reached there, the Baba who lived there ran away. He has nothing to do with the paper leak case,” Singh said.

The preacher also held satsangs in Meena's house, Singh said. In fact, posters and banners of the Baba still hang in front of the house.

He said when some SOG officials saw pictures of the stampede in Hathras in the media, they recognized the man as “Bhole Baba”.

Festive offer

Meena is said to have secured government jobs for over 500 youth in various government departments over the past 15 years by leaking examination papers. Up to 20 people from his family benefited from this. When police seized documents from Meena's estates in Jaipur, Dausa and Mahwa, benami properties worth Rs 5 crore were discovered.

The SOG arrested Meena in February 2024.
