LEGION BASEBALL: 19U Lakers open Wood Bat Classic with two narrow losses

COEUR d'ALENE – The 19U North Idaho Lakers fought tooth and nail but fell to the Multisport Maroon 18U, a travel team from Montesano, Wash., 6-5, and the Calgary Blues AAA 7-6 to open the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene Wood Bat Classic Thursday at Thorco Field.

In the first game against Multisport, Dallen Williams hit a two-run single and Parker Reichart later scored Williams on a suicide squeeze to lead a three-run Lakers rally in the first inning. Mason Little was trailing 4-3 when he hit an RBI single to center to tie the game at 4-4. After allowing a run in the second half of the inning, Greyson Johnson walked the bases loaded in the sixth inning to tie the game again. However, luck was not on the Lakers' side in the sixth inning, as Multisport scored on a throwing error to end the game.

North Idaho rotated four pitchers in the first game — Jorden Tyler, Sage Medeiros, Chase Sanroman and Dallen Williams. Tyler started and went 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits, three walks and two earned runs. Medeiros went 1 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk and striking out two batters. Chase Sanroman was also solid as a relief pitcher, allowing two hits and one earned run and striking out one batter in two innings.

After playing multisport earlier in the morning, the Lakers took on the Calgary Blues in the afternoon. Going into the sixth inning, North Idaho trailed 7-0 and had only two hits…but their bats came alive. Williams hit a two-run double to right field, Gavin Day, Tyler and Johnson were all hit by pitches with the bases loaded, and Chase Sanroman hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to tie the game 7-6. With the bases loaded again, Calgary was able to strike out Reichart for a 3-2 count to end the thrilling game.

Alex Leverich was blamed for the loss after starting for the Lakers at baseman, pitching 2 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, two walks and four earned runs and striking out a batter. Reichart was great as a relief pitcher, allowing four hits and three walks and striking out a batter in 1 2/3 innings. Cole Sanroman pitched 1 2/3 innings as a relief pitcher with no hits, allowing three walks and allowing three unearned runs while striking out a batter.

After losing four straight games by one point each, North Idaho (10-9) will look to turn things around on Friday against Wenatchee Valley and Coeur d'Alene.
