This is California's best fried chicken shop, according to Yelp

LOS ANGELES – Whether you prefer Southern style, Korean fried or Nashville hot, there is no shortage of good chicken in the USA

Yelp just released its list of the best chicken restaurants in every state, and the Golden State's most popular chicken dish is right here in Southern California.

First place went to Howlin' Rays in Los Angeles. According to its Yelp page, the restaurant has 4.7 stars and more than 7,700 reviews.

The Nashville-inspired hot chicken staple from Chef Johnny Ray Zone and his wife Amanda Chapman started as a food truck in 2015, serving the people of LA. Chef Johnny Ray Zone and his wife Amanda Chapman. It was so popular that they opened their first brick-and-mortar location in Chinatown's Far East Plaza the following year. A second location opened in Pasadena in 2019.

Although the alleys are notorious for their length, foodies travel from near and far to enjoy this spicy chicken experience.

“The best chicken I've ever had!! The meat is very tender and seasoned just right, with levels of heat to suit every taste. The sauce complements the chicken very well. I live out of town and dream about this chicken,” wrote one Yelper.

“This is my absolute favorite hot chicken restaurant in Nashville. And I've been to so many. I used to come here when I had to wait three hours. Since they opened the Pasadena restaurant, that's not the case anymore,” said another.

“I love, love, love this place! The best Nashville Hot Chicken in LA! Howlin's chicken is amazing; crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside! I'll never forget my first visit! I stood in line for three hours, six months pregnant, and it was definitely worth it!” said another Yelper.

To get the results, Yelp Elites identified businesses in the “Chicken Shops” category on Yelp with a large concentration of five-star Elite reviews.
