Nate Michael named assistant basketball coach at Eastern Illinois

Eastern Illinois Men's Basketball Coach Marty Simmons has completed its coaching staff for the upcoming season with the hiring of Nate Michael as assistant coach of the Panthers.

Michael joins the EIU staff after spending the last two seasons on Daniyal Robinson's staff at Cleveland State, where the Vikings made back-to-back appearances in the CBI postseason tournament. During his time with the CSU staff, Michael worked as the director of student-athlete development and video coordinator. The program posted back-to-back 21-win seasons, with Tristan Enaruna being named to the All-Horizon League first team both seasons before recently signing as a free agent with the Boston Celtics.

Prior to Cleveland State, Michael spent three years at Kansas State on head coach Bruce Weber's staff. During his first two seasons at KSU, Michael served as a student assistant manager, and in his third season, he served as the team's video coordinator. Michael would complete his master's degree at Kansas State in 2021.

He played college basketball at McKendree for five seasons and finished his career in the top 20 for most points and in the top 10 for most three-pointers made. Michael earned his bachelor's degree from McKendree in 2018 and completed his first master's degree from McKendree in 2019.

In addition to his experience as a player and coach, Michael has worked in summer camps with some of the top programs in the country, including Purdue, Oklahoma, Creighton and Northern Iowa.

He and his wife Sesely recently welcomed a son, Trace, into their family.

Simmons also announced the hiring of Carlos Cortez as a graduate assistant for the Panthers men's basketball team. Cortez served as the Panthers' head student manager for the last two years before graduating from EIU in May.
