Luka Doncic and Slovenia reach semifinals of Olympic qualification

Luka Doncic and Slovenia can still hope to make it to the Olympics. And, to their own surprise, the Philippines do too.

Doncic had 36 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as Slovenia beat New Zealand 104-78 on Thursday to book a spot in the semifinals of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Piraeus, Greece. Slovenia needed to win by at least 10 points to advance to the semifinals.

Slovenia's likely opponent on Saturday is Greece, meaning Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo will lead their teams – the winner will advance to Sunday's final and have a chance to play for a spot at the Paris Olympics.

Josh Nebo had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Slovenia. Shea Ili led New Zealand with 28 points.

Georgia 96, Philippines 94

The Philippines lost but still advanced to the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday in Riga, Latvia. That was a bit of a problem because the team had booked a flight home for Friday.

“I guess we have to back them off a little bit,” said Filipino coach Tim Cone. “That's how surprised we are to be here and talking to you guys. It's the first time I've felt good about a loss.”

Georgia had to win by at least 19 points to have any chance of advancing.

Sandro Mamukelashvili led Georgia with 26 points and Goga Bitadze finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Brownlee was the Philippines' top scorer with 28 points and added eight rebounds and eight assists.

Cameroon 77, Brazil 74

Cameroon won and advanced, Brazil lost but still won their group, and Montenegro lost without even playing.

Jeremiah Hill led Cameroon with 22 points. Cameroon needed to win to advance to Saturday's semifinals; a loss would have put Montenegro in the semifinals.

Leo Meindl was Brazil's best player with 19 points. To win the group, Brazil only had to win the game or lose by six points or less. If Brazil had lost by 15 points or more, it would have been eliminated and Montenegro would have advanced.

Lebanon 74, Angola 70

Omari Spellman scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Lebanon advanced to the semifinals of the qualifying match in Valencia, Spain.

Karim Zeinoun scored another 15 points for the winners, including a personal 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter when he turned a game that was tied 49-49 into one that Lebanon led 56-49 – and never trailed again.

Gerson Goncalves scored 13 and Bruno Fernando added 12 for Angola, who were eliminated.
