Tinder rape suspect arrested in Spain after dramatic video

This is the dramatic moment a fugitive rape suspect was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting two women he met on the dating app Tinder – two years after he faked his death and went on the run.

James Clacher, 55, was hanging upside down from a public exercise machine on a beach on Spain's Costa del Sol when he was ambushed by two undercover police officers posing as tourists.

Recently released video footage shows a plainclothes police officer running towards Clacher – who faked his disappearance in Scotland before fleeing – while a female police officer approached him from behind.

Detectives are seen allowing him to put on a T-shirt before escorting him to the police station where he is fingerprinted and given a mug shot.

Spain's Guardia Civil today released the first footage of the May 21 arrest, showing how authorities tracked him down.

“The operation began when the UK National Crime Agency received an anonymous tip-off that he might be in Nerja and immediately contacted the Guardia Civil's UCO unit,” a Scottish police spokesman said.

“This information, along with other data about the fugitive that suggested his life was closely linked to sports, enabled officials to track him down in this city.

“They found that he was well integrated into the sports community and was using a false identity.

“After his identity was confirmed following discreet surveillance, he was arrested while he was doing gymnastics exercises in a recreational area on the beach in Nerja.

“This individual, described by Scottish police as dangerous, has been accused of sexually assaulting two women he met on a dating app.”

Clacher was due to stand trial for allegedly raping a woman in a flat in southwest Scotland in August 2019 and another attack on a woman in a flat in Glasgow in September 2020, when he disappeared.

The gym boss was last seen in a town east of Glasgow on May 30, 2022 and was reported missing after his clothes and Suzuki Swift car were found in a car park on Loch Long the next day.

“Police Scotland later concluded that this was not an involuntary disappearance and that he had fled to avoid arrest,” police added.

A Scottish Police spokesman announced earlier this year that he had been found and detained in Spain: “A 55-year-old man was arrested in Spain on Tuesday 21 May on an international arrest warrant.

“We are in contact with partner agencies and extradition proceedings are being initiated against him.”

It was not immediately clear today whether Clacher is resisting extradition or has agreed to fly back to Britain to face trial there.
