Kings were close to a Lauri Markkanen trade

The Sacramento Kings have been the focus of many transfer rumors this offseason, but with no deal reached yet, a blockbuster could be imminent.

The Kings have been linked to Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan and most recently Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen. While it seems unlikely that the Jazz will trade their star forward, reports suggest that the Kings could be the team to get rid of him.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports said on the “No Cap Room” podcast earlier this week that the Kings are “close to a deal” with Utah for Lauri Markkanen.

Unfortunately, if the Kings come out after the offseason with reports that they are close to making a big move, many Sacramento fans would not be shocked. Until a deal is done, it will be the same old story for the Kings.

Markkanen, 27, would be a huge hit for Sacramento. The former All-Star averaged 24.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game with shooting percentages of 49.0/39.5/88.5 in two seasons in Utah.

After Markkanen became a rising star with the Jazz, he is highly coveted on the transfer market. For the Kings, this means they will likely have to do without rising star Keegan Murray in this deal.

A talented trio of De'Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis and Lauri Markkanen would catapult the Kings into title contention, but how much of their future would Sacramento have to give up for that scenario? Markkanen is entering the final year of his contract and will soon receive a max extension. If Markkanen doesn't want to sign an extension with the Kings, it would all be for nothing.

Jake Fischer says, “Utah would rather keep Lauri,” but in the unlikely event that they trade him, the Kings will have to be first in line.
