Nathaniel Lowe hits two home runs and leads the Texas Rangers' extra-base hit brigade over the Padres

ARLINGTON — Nathaniel Lowe hit two home runs and led a season-high eight extra-base hits as the Texas Rangers defeated the San Diego Padres 7-0 on Tuesday night at Globe Life Field.

Lowe hit two home runs in the first and third innings to give Texas an early 5-0 lead. Josh Smith worked a walk before Lowe hit both home runs.

The Rangers have eight extra-base hits this season, including six doubles. Leody Taveras had two of them, including an RBI double that scored Jonah Heim, who had opened the second inning with a double. Wyatt Langford, Adolis Garcia and Jonathan Ornelas each had a double.

The Rangers have had 21 extra-base hits in their last three games. The slugging spike was quite a contrast to most of the rest of the season, where the club struggled to generate much power. In the first 25 games in June, for example, the Rangers had 50 extra-base hits.

Nathan Eovaldi had an outstanding performance on Tuesday night, holding the Padres scoreless with one hit in the first six innings.

Nathan Eovaldi made his best start of the season, holding the Padres scoreless with one hit over seven innings while recording six strikeouts. Eovaldi improved to 5-3 with the win and lowered his ERA to 3.15. It is his first scoreless appearance since going 5 1/3 innings against the Nationals on May 2. Eovaldi retired the last 13 batters he faced, allowing only a two-out single by Bryce Johnson in the third inning.

Jonathan Ornelas scored his first MLB extra-base hit and RBI with a run-scoring double in the sixth inning on Tuesday night.

Jonathan Ornelas got his first RBI on his first extra-base hit when he hit a single to the left corner to bring in a double off Leody Taveras in the sixth inning. It was the Rangers' eighth extra-base hit of the night, a season-high.

Jon Gray is expected to start Game 2 against Padres right-hander Adam Mazur on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
